Touhou Project is a series of vertical danmaku (bullet hell) shooter games. It is known for its vast amount of mostly female characters and well-composed music.

What is Touhou Project?

Touhou Project (東方Project) is a series of 2D vertically-scrolling danmaku shooting games. First five games in the Touhou series were made for Japanese PC-98 computers by Amusement Makers. And after 4 years of hiatus, the series was continued to Windows computers by it's current developer, Team Shanghai Alice. It is said to be run by only one man, a former Amusement Makers member, who calls himself ZUN. He has been credited for designing, programming, script writing and composing in all of the Touhou games to date. He is said to be rather reclusive, so not much is known about him...

Touhou Project on Nico Nico Douga

It is said that the first Touhou video that achieved considerable fame on Nico Nico Douga was the music video for IOSYS's Marisa Stole The Precious Thing. After that, more Touhou videos started slowly to surface. Nico Nico users started to upload vocalized BGMs, parodies and other stuff like that on Nico Nico Douga. Nowadays, Touhou Project's fame is more based on the fan-made songs, videos, comics and artwork, rather than on the original games. This is the most common reason why newcomers first think Touhou Project is some kind of anime.

Touhou Project in Nico Nico Medleys

Touhou songs have been present since the first Nico Nico Medley (Chuudoku no Kata e Okuru Ikkyoku). Marisa Stole The Precious Thing has been one of the most used songs on Nico Nico Medleys to date. Other pretty often used songs are Kanbu de Tomatte Sugu Tokete ~ Kyouki no Udongein, Help Me, Erinnnnnn!!, U.N. Owen was Her? and Kero ⑨ Destiny

List of Touhou songs that have appeared on Nico Nico medleys:

  • Marisa Stole The Precious Thing
    - Song based on Alice Margatroid's theme (Doll Judgment ~ The Girl who Played with People's Shapes; 3rd boss theme) from Perfect Cherry Blossom, and her stage theme (Romantic Children; 3rd stage theme) from Mystic Square
    - Arranged by IOSYS
  • Kanbu de Tomatte Sugu Tokete ~ Kyouki no Udongein
    - Song based on Reisen Udongein Inaba's theme (Lunatic Eyes ~ Invisible Full Moon; 5th boss theme) from Imperishable Night
    - Arranged by IOSYS
  • Help Me, Erinnnnnn!!
    - Song based on Kaguya Houraisan's theme (Flight of the Bamboo Cutter ~ Lunatic Princess; alternative Final stage boss theme) from Imperishable Night
    - Arranged by COOL&CREATE
  • Kero ⑨ Destiny
    - Song based on Suwako Moriya's theme (Native Faith; Extra stage boss theme) from Mountain of Faith
    - Arranged by Silver Forest
  • U.N. Owen was Her?
    - Flandre Scarlet's theme (Extra stage boss theme) from The Embodiment of Scarlet Devil
  • Night of Nights/Knights
    - Remix based on Sakuya Izayoi's theme (Flowering Night) from Phantasmagoria of Flower View
    - Due to it's romaji translation (ナイト・オブ・ナイツ -> Naito obu Naitsu), there's a constant discussion about whether the correct title is Night of Nights or Night of Knights, since they're both spelled the same way
