What is Touhou Project?

Touhou Project (東方Project) is a series of 2D vertically-scrolling danmaku (bullet hell) shooting games. First five games in the Touhou series were made for Japanese PC-98 computers by ZUN, under the team of Amusement Makers. After 4 years of hiatus after the fifth game, Mystic Square, the series was continued to Windows computers by its developer, who moved to the team name of Shanghai Alice. It is run by only one man, ZUN, the former Amusement Makers member. He has been credited for designing, programming, script writing and composing in all of the Touhou games to date. He is said to be rather reclusive, since not much is known about him...

Touhou Project on Nico Nico Douga

It is said that the first Touhou video that achieved considerable fame was the music video for IOSYS's Marisa Stole The Precious Thing. After that, more Touhou videos started slowly to surface on Nico Nico Douga. Nico Nico users started to upload vocalized BGMs, parodies and other stuff like that on Nico Nico Douga. Nowadays, Touhou Project's fame is more based on the fan-made songs, videos, comics and artwork, rather than on the original games. This is the most common reason why newcomers mistakes Touhou Project as some kind of anime.

Touhou Project in Nico Nico Medleys

Touhou songs have been present since the first Nico Nico Medley (Chuudoku no Kata e Okuru Ikkyoku). Marisa Stole The Precious Thing has been one of the most used songs on Nico Nico Medleys to date. Other pretty often used songs are Kanbu de Tomatte Sugu Tokete ~ Kyouki no Udongein, Help Me, Erinnnnnn!!, U.N. Owen was Her? and Kero ⑨ Destiny
